During this class we will explore how the Jewish people/nation developed its identity from a social or cultural history perspective. Although some of this is formed by theological ideas or religious practice, the collection of essays in David Biale's Cultures of the Jews considers the relationship the Jews had to the larger, non-Jewish world.
We will have assigned readings for each class and one response-style essay (2-3 pages) for each class. The format of our classes will be:
Students are expected to form a topic (on their own), either directly or indirectedly related to the readings, and write an 8-10 page paper. You should be thinking about possible topics. Paper title and 1 paragraph description are due by the end of the 2nd week of the session. I will have a description of the paper criteria available shortly.
