Description

Chinese Language and Cultural Research is a non profit organisation dedicated to bringing Chinese language and culture for the general public. We would like to develop a creative web site that will reflect our ongoing research. In our dreams it would be a museum-like, temple-like virtual space where a visitor could move in many dimentions. Some areas in that space will be dedicated to Feng Shui, I Ching, puppets, Tao, poetry, celebrations, etc.

Expectations

To provide a reliable information about specific aspects of Chinese language, culture, and celebrations.

What proposer can provide for Evergreen

An opportunity to provide a much needed service and an opportunity to work on a creative Web site with animation, sound, multimedia, etc.

Reasons to collaborate

We want to create something unique in virtual space. We don't have the money, time, or expertise to develop it ourselves.

Addendum

To follow up on our conversation we envision a Data Base for the Chinese Language and Cultural Research that will be continuously expanding and will include information about Celebrations and Festivals, Poetry, Linguistic Research, etc. and will have a community board. For example we are in the process of producing the Autumn Festival Chong Yang Jie at TESC and SPCC. We are generating information about customs associated with this festival that could go into the Data Base.

Students may also want to check out the "Celebration of Chinese Music and Arts at Evergreen, October 19, 2002. 2:00 PM and at South Puget Sound Community College, October 19, 2002 at 7 PM.

Chong Yang Jie is a Chinese autumn festival. Among the customs associated with this festival are excursions to the mountains to appreciate the levity and beauty of ascent, and celebrations of harvest. This is also a time to show appreciation and respect for older people.

With performing guest artists Liang Xiu Cheng, a virtuoso er-hu player and composer from Beijing, Cao Chen, renowned Beijing Opera star, HengDa Dance Academy, And the Olympia Chinese Ensemble

Sponsored by TESC Academic Program Voyages of Discovery and Understanding, TESC Performing and Media Arts, The Chinese Language and Cultural Research Foundation, Olympia Area Chinese Fellowship, and the South Puget Sound Community College.

Suggested Donation - $7.00

Addendum

I am excited that some of the ideas I presented may be interesting to develop further with students from Community Information Systems Partnership Project. Of course students can work with other people from our foundation if I am not available. My wife, Jennie, is actively working with me developing the programs and services of the Chinese Language and Cultural Research Foundation. There are also board directors and volunteers, but they work on specific projects and may, or may not be available. The foundation has a DELL computer with windows 98 and Office 2000. We will be getting a new computer soon, I just don't know how soon. We are developing a documentary project about Chinese puppets, so it depends how quick we'll be getting funds, and should it be a MAC or PC and with what software.

We used to pay $70 for a domain name and had a server, but our www site was not really functional, so we dropped it. My thinking is that we may start by using a free server and then if necessary upgrade to a contracted server, but this is optional and can depend on what the designers will think.

I hope that answers some of your questions. We may have interesting ideas and have access to interesting material but our technical knowledge is minimal at best.

Addendum

This is the follow up to our conversations about a www site for Chinese Language and Cultural Research (CLCR). If student/s in your program would be interested we can have more then one person from CLCR to work with them.

We would like to have an accumulating database for a bulletin/community board, past events and research, etc. If the proposed site becomes developed and requires a server we will be happy to register with one. I think this could be one of the questions the will be answered in the site developement, i.e. what server will offer us what we'll need. In our last conversation you mentioned that
temporarily it could be stored on a machine at TESC (the old "grace").

Let me know if you have additional questions.
